USAToday.Com reports that American consumers spent $95 billion dollars last year on convenience dining. Convenience dining includes fast-food, drive-thru and the new megatrend “curbside” dining.
In 1975, the first drive-through McDonald’s was established in Arizona. Drive-throughs, which are highly profitable, have been a key part of the fast-food resurgence in the United States. Companies have extended operating hours, operating exclusively via drive-throughs at many restaurants as a inexpensive way to boost sales. This profitable trend is become a global revenue bucket but has taken it’s toll on consumer health and well-being.
In 2002, a report of the staff of the Federal Trade Commission reported that American consumers spent about $30 billion a year in weight loss products and services. Basically, a snapshot of consumer spending habits reflects that $95 billion dollars is being spent on unhealthy eating habits and only $30 billion dollars are being spent on weight loss and management solutions. It’s no wonder that two out of three Americans are overweight or obese and an epidemic has swept our nation.
It’s time for us to take control, make healthier food choices and become more active — our futures and the futures of generations to follow, depend on it.
Look around you, we’ve become a sedentary society of eating disorders. After a late meal, it’s common to sit on the couch and watch a couple hours of television. We are a growing nation of overweight, unhealthy people.
Sadly, by the year 2050 the Center of Disease Control estimates approximately 46,000,000 people will suffer from diabetes and the complications that it brings. Although these statistics are bleak, the good news is that we can do something about it. It’s time for us to get on our feet and walk to be fit.
